Porsche launched the second-generation Panamera (971.1) for the 2017 model year, marking a significant evolution in design and technology. The new model featured a wider, lower, and sleeker profile, shedding its previous hunchbacked look for a sportier and more elegant appearance. The refreshed exterior was matched by a completely reimagined interior, which included touch-sensitive surfaces and expansive display screens.
The development of the second-generation Panamera (G2) encompassed multiple variants. In addition to the standard Gran Turismo with both standard and extended wheelbases, Porsche introduced a third variant: the Sport Turismo, all built on the same platform.
The powertrains were entirely new for the second generation. The base 971.1 Panamera and 971.1 Panamera 4 were equipped with a turbocharged 3.0ltr V6 producing 325hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. The 971.1 Panamera 4S and S models received a new turbocharged 2.9ltr V6 with 434hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. The Panamera 4S also featured an E-Hybrid variant, combining an electric motor with the internal combustion engine to deliver a robust 552 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.
The second-generation GTS came with a 4.0ltr twin-turbo V8 producing 454hp and 457 lb-ft of torque, later updated to 473hp in the 2021 refresh. The Panamera turbo's 4.0ltr twin-turbo V8 offered 542hp and 568 lb-ft of torque, while the range-topping turbo S E-Hybrid boasted an impressive 680 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.
Performance improvements were notable across all models. Thanks to advanced chassis systems like the three-chamber air suspension, rear-axle steering, and the PDCC Sport electromechanical roll stabilization system, the second-generation Panamera firmly established itself as the leading performance four-door sedan on the market.
