In 2015, Porsche surprised enthusiasts with the 981 Cayman GT4, a collaboration between Porsche Motorsport in Weissach and the Cayman. Featuring components from the 911 GT3 and a Carrera S engine, it aimed to be the ultimate mid-engine sports car for both road and track.
The GT4 boasted a 3.8ltr flat-six engine delivering 385hp, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox featuring dynamic gearbox mounts for optimized performance. Its chassis was lowered by 30mm, fitted with larger brakes, and borrowed aspects of its suspension from the 911 GT3, ensuring formidable track capabilities.
Visually, the 981 Cayman GT4 exuded aggression with a vented front bumper for improved cooling, a lower ride height, fixed rear wing, and larger side intakes. Inside, sport seats upholstered in leather and Alcantara offered support during spirited driving. The GT4's enhanced engine capacity provided more torque, propelling it from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds and achieving a top speed of 183 mph. Despite criticisms of its engine lacking drama, its 7800rpm redline still delivered exhilarating performance.
Porsche's engineering prowess was evident in the GT4's impressive lap time of 7 minutes and 40 seconds on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Buyers could further enhance their GT4 with options like Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, carbon fiber seats, and a Club Sport Package for track-focused enthusiasts.
