About 968 (1992-1995)

The Porsche 968, produced by German automaker Porsche AG from 1991 to 1995, represented the culmination of nearly two decades of development in water-cooled, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive models initiated with the 924. Derived from the 944, it assumed the entry-level position in Porsche's lineup, succeeding its predecessor. Similarly to its predecessor, the 968 came in coupe and convertible versions and remarkably, it marked Porsche's final foray into new front-engined vehicles until the Cayenne SUV's debut in 2003.

During its development, engineers extensively revamped or replaced approximately 80 percent of the 944's mechanical components. This extensive overhaul prompted Porsche management to introduce the resultant vehicle as an entirely new model, named the 968. Alongside mechanical enhancements, the 968 boasted a sleeker, more contemporary design inside and out, offering an array of standard luxury features surpassing those of its predecessor, the 944.

To optimize production efficiency, manufacturing shifted from the Audi plant in Neckarsulm, where the 924 and 944 were previously produced under contract, to Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory. This relocation aimed to streamline production processes while maintaining the high standards synonymous with Porsche craftsmanship.
