In 1987, Porsche introduced the 944 S, heralding a new era of performance for the model. The 944 S boasted a potent naturally aspirated, dual-overhead-cam 16-valve engine, delivering 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) from its 2.5ltr displacement. This engine marked a significant departure for the 944, featuring four valves per cylinder and DOHC, inspired by the design of the 928 S4.
Derived from the 928 S4, the 944 S engine showcased a redesigned camshaft drive, a magnesium intake tract/passages, a magnesium valve cover, a larger capacity oil sump, and a revised exhaust system. The alternator capacity was increased to 115 amps, while improvements were made to the wheel bearings and brake servo action. Floating 944 calipers came standard, complemented by the rear wheel brake circuit pressure regulator borrowed from the 944 Turbo.
Externally, small '16 Ventiler' script badges adorned the sides, signifying the engine's valve count. Performance-wise, the 944 S excelled with a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint accomplished in 6.5 seconds (Best) and a top speed of 232 km/h (144 mph), owing to its curb weight of 1,296 kg (2,857 lb). The model also featured an enhanced programmed Bosch Digital Motronic 2.1 Computer/DME with dual knock sensors, optimizing fuel performance for the higher 10.9:1 compression ratio cylinder head.
Similar to the 944 Turbo, the 944 S benefited from progressive springs for improved handling, larger front and rear anti-roll bars, and revised transmission and gearing tailored to the engine's higher 6,800 rpm rev limit. Optional features included dual airbags, a limited-slip differential, and an anti-lock braking system, further enhancing the model's safety and performance credentials.
