About 944 Turbo 2.5L 8V 1985-88

In 1985, Porsche unveiled the 944 turbo for the model year, internally designated as the 951. This high-performance variant boasted a turbocharged and intercooled version of the standard 944's engine, delivering 220PS (162kW) (217hp (162 kW) in the US) at 6,000 rpm. Car and Driver's 1987 test of the 944 Turbo recorded a remarkable 0–97 km/h (0–60 mph) time of 5.9 seconds.

Distinguishing itself as a trailblazer, the turbo marked Porsche's first production car to incorporate a ceramic port liner, ensuring optimal exhaust gas temperature control. Additionally, it introduced new forged pistons and achieved identical power output with or without a catalytic converter. The turbo underwent several enhancements, including improved aerodynamics featuring an integrated front bumper with the widest turn signals ever fitted to a production car.

Notable upgrades encompassed a reinforced gearbox with a distinct final drive ratio, standard external oil coolers for both engine and transmission, and 16-inch wheels (with optional forged Fuchs wheels). Its suspension received progressive springs for added rigidity to manage the increased weight. Constructed with inconel, the Turbo's headers, crossover pipe, and downpipe ensured enhanced durability.

Borrowing the front and rear brakes from the 911, the turbo featured Brembo 4-piston fixed calipers and 12-inch discs. To accommodate heightened internal loads and heat, the 951 underwent over thirty engine component revisions, exemplifying Porsche's commitment to performance and engineering excellence.
