About 928S4 5.0L 1987-92

In 1987, the exterior underwent a significant revision that lasted until the end of production in 1995. This redesign integrated the front spoiler into the nose, smoothing out the profile to align with contemporary car design preferences. The rear spoiler became a separate wing, and side skirts were added for a more modern look. The rear tail-light configuration was updated, moving away from the inset design of earlier models.

Utilizing a transaxle alongside the water-cooled V8 engine, Porsche aimed for a balanced 50/50 front/rear weight distribution in the 928, similar to the contemporary 911. The body, styled by Wolfgang Möbius under the guidance of Anatole Lapine, featured aluminum components for weight reduction and a galvanized steel chassis. Polyurethane elastic bumpers, integrated into the nose and tail, reduced drag and improved aesthetics. The distinctive pop-up headlamps, inspired by those of the Lamborghini Miura, added to the 928's distinctive appearance.

Internally classified as a 2+2, the 928 offered two small rear seats that could fold down, expanding the luggage area. While sun visors were available for both front and rear occupants, the rear seats were limited in size due to the transmission hump, primarily suitable for short trips or accommodating children.

An innovative instrument cluster, moving along with the adjustable steering wheel, ensured optimal visibility for the driver. The 928 also featured the "Weissach Axle," a passive rear-wheel steering system aimed at enhancing stability during braking and turns. The engine, notable for its unsleeved, silicon-alloy aluminum block, contributed to reduced weight and durable cylinder bore.

The 928 S4 variant, introduced in 1986 as a 1987 model, boasted an updated 5.0ltr V8 engine producing 235 kW; 316hp (320 PS). Sporting significant styling updates for a cleaner, sleeker look, the S4 was designed to be more universally appealing across different markets.
