About 924 Carrera GT 2.0L 1981

In 1979, Porsche revealed a concept iteration of the 924 at the Frankfurt Auto Show, adorned with Carrera badges. Just a year later, in 1980, Porsche launched the 924 Carrera GT, signaling their intent to enter the 924 into racing competitions.

Through the addition of an intercooler, a compression increase to 8.5:1, a suspension lowering, and various other tweaks, Porsche transformed the 924 Turbo into the desired race car, branding it the "924 Carrera GT". A total of 406 units (including prototypes) of the Carrera GT were crafted to meet Group 4 racing prerequisites. Among the 400 road-ready models, 75 were tailored for the UK market with right-hand drive.

Visually, the Carrera GT distinguished itself from the standard 924 Turbo with polyurethane plastic front and rear flared guards, a front spoiler, a top-mounted intercooler air scoop, a substantially larger rubber rear spoiler, and a flush-mounted front windscreen. Inside, Recaro seats with fine red pinstripes added to the sporty appeal. Exterior paint options included black, "Guards Red", and "Diamond Silver". Standard Pirelli P6 tyres were fitted, while Pirelli P7 tyres were offered as an option, along with a limited-slip differential. The Carrera GT abandoned the NACA duct on the hood of the 924 Turbo but retained the air intakes in the badge panel. This more aggressive styling later inspired the design of the 944.

To meet homologation regulations, the 924 Carrera GT and later the 924 Carrera GTS were offered as road-legal vehicles, boasting power outputs of 210 and 245 hp (157 and 183 kW), respectively. Clubsport versions of the GTS were also available, generating 280 hp (209 kW; 284 PS) and equipped with a factory-installed Matter roll cage and race seats. The 924 Carrera GT variants were identified by model numbers 937 (left-hand drive) and 938 (right-hand drive).
